Songkhla is aland of culture , an ancient land of thousands of years on years on the basin plain land of the lake which has seas on the 2 coasts i.e. Songkhla Lake and Gulf of Thailand which Popularly is called Sathingphra Cape. Now the site of Amphur Sathingphra, Amphur Ranode, Sub-district Krasaesindh and Amphur Singhanakorn. The word Songkhla is though to be derived from the word Singhala which means lion by Indian, Persian and Arabian merchants who had seen koh Nu-Koh Maew which look like 2 lions kneeling. At present Muang songkhla is famous in fishery, while Amphur Hatyai is a commercial and communication center. In the area of commerce and communication, Songkhla Hatyaitown has been established as main town of lower Southern Region.
Songkhla is administratively divided into 15 districts and 1 subdistrict: Amphur Muang Songkhla, Amphur Bang Klam, Amphur Chana, Amphur Hat Yai, Amphur Khuan Niang, Amphur Krasae Sin, Amphur Na Mom, Amphur Na Thawi, Amphur Ranot, Amphur Rattaphum, Amphur Saba Yoi, Amphur Sadao, Amphur Sathing Phra, Amphur Singha Nakhon, Amphur Thepha and King Amphur Hoi Khong.
Songkhla Province has an area of 7,393 sq.km. and a population of 1,060,029 the majority of which or 66% are Buddhism and contains communities of the 3 races i.e. Thai Buddhist, Chinese and Islamic. Consequently, some of the culture has been blended together.
